Internet Industry Code of Practice

Recently you may have noticed discussion about the issue of content regulation on the Internet. These lengthy debates have resulted in the enactment of new content regulation legislation by the Australian Federal Government, in an attempt to prevent access to inappropriate content by people under the age of 18.

The Australian Broadcasting Authority (ABA) will provide the regulatory and administrative framework for the new legislation. To find out more about the ABA and the legislation visit www.aba.gov.au/

In response to the Government's amendments the Internet Industry Association has established a Code of Practice, to read the code visit www.iia.net.au/

As a responsible member of the Australian Internet Community, Betterlink will be complying with the requirements of this code.

What this means for Betterlink Customers:

The Broadcasting Services Act 1992 requires Betterlink to provide for use by its customers an approved content filter. The filter restricts access to Internet sites that contain content classified as "prohibited" by the Australian Broadcasting Authority.

Parental supervision of children's usage is really the most effective content filter available. Read the ABA's Tips for parents at http://www.aba.gov.au/family/family/tips_parents.html

What this means for Betterlink Customers with Personal Web Sites:

Betterlink customers with personal Web pages are encouraged to use appropriate labelling systems for all content. For content that is unsuitable for children, content owners are required to have an age verification process in place. Information on content classification can be found at the Office of Film and Literature Classification site at http://www.oflc.gov.au/

What To Do If You Have A Content Complaint

Betterlink customers have the right to complain about unsuitable sites to the ABA. To contact the ABA please go to http://www.aba.gov.au/ or contact free call 1 800 22 6667

What This Means for Betterlink Partners:

Betterlink partners including resellers, web developers, OEMs and referral sites are advised that Betterlink is complying with the Internet Industry Code of Practice by giving subscribers the option to use approved content filtering software to block access to prohibited content on the Internet.
